Predicting battery life ahead of time is a difficult task given many different factors including but not limited to:
- Average operating temperature
- GPS and Cellular reception
- Device movement patterns
- Device settings and configuration
- Battery type and quality
The Oyster2 is highly configurable and has a variety of different tracking modes so that you can choose the optimum balance between getting the information that you need as well as achieving your required battery life.
In short, you can expect up to 7 years battery life at 1 position per day!
If set to track based on movement, lifetime will be 6 to 18 months depending on movement and your specific settings.
Ensuring reliable low battery alerts are sent is extremely important so that they can be changed in time. To provide this the Oyster2 has a Battery Meter (coulomb counter) which tracks the energy used by the device, and given we know the total energy stored in the batteries, we can give a percentage.
This also means we get real world energy consumption.
So the task of predicting battery life becomes easy! Run the Oyster2 in your application for a week or two, look at the real-world data drawn from having the device in your application, with your settings – and Telematics Guru will give you an estimated battery life. No more fiddling with spreadsheets and calculations.

Switch between periodic, GPS movement based, and accelerometer movement-based tracking modes with ease.
The device cleverly uses the Accelerometer and GPS in tandem to vary the update rate based on movement, giving you more detail where you need it, and preserving battery life where you don’t.
The device can be set to report infrequently, but then be switched into Recovery Mode (live tracking) over the air – allowing you to recover a missing or stolen asset.
Yes, we have multiple alert options including:
- Wake and upload as soon as any minor accelerometer movement (jostling) is detected.
- Wake and upload after moving a certain distance from stationary, or upon entering or leaving a geofence.
Geofences can even be downloaded to and stored on the device via Telematics Guru. This allows the device to vary its update rate based on where it is. Perhaps providing extra reporting when in an area of interest.
The Oyster2 can be set to “Jostle Mode
” which means that it will go ‘in trip’ whenever vibration is detected, for example when a pump or generator starts up. This trip time is added to the device’s run hours. Jostle Mode is independent of GPS.
The Oyster2 is powered by user replaceable AA batteries – no sending the device back to the supplier for a battery change!
The Oyster2 supports a wide input voltage range (4-16V) enabling off-the-shelf Lithium Iron Disulphide (LiFeSO2) such as Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries to be used. The device can also be fitted with Lithium Thionyl Chloride (LTC) batteries if extended temperature tolerance and optimum performance is required.
Convenient mounting tabs with screw holes enable the device to be screwed or bolted to an asset. Strap slots are also available for cable ties/straps.
GPS and Cellular Signals are amplified by Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs), meaning they can still perform in very harsh signal environments. The Oyster2 has been proven to work on the under side of trailers, hidden under seats, in glove boxes etc.
