The Oyster2 is the evolution of the hugely popular Oyster Cellular.

Digital Matter's compact, rugged battery GPS tracking device has been designed for tracking containers, trailers, skip bins, and other assets where super-long battery life is required without sacrificing the frequency of updates and performance.

4G Cat-M1/Nb-IoT Modem

The Oyster2's 4G modem is compatible with both Cat-M1 and Nb-IoT networks - enabling great new benefits. Traditional cellular network specifications (like 4G LTE Cat 9/12) are designed to provide high speeds and bandwith - to enable smartphone users to stream videos and facilitate other data-intensive activities.

IoT devices don't need this type of bandwidth and are typically trying to solve other problems. These IoT devices require
  • Small data messages typically at low data rates
  • Long Range
  • Low power to allow for long battery life
  • Low cost - to facilitate the deployment of many millions of them
The LTE Cat-M1 and NB1 specifications allow the cellular modem (uBlox SARA R4) to be simpler and smaller. In our testing we have measured that our new Cat-M1 devices use anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 of the power of our 3G devices to perform a data upload.

Battery Meter

The Oyster2 is fitted with a Coulomb Counter which tracks the devices energy consumption. It is hard to predict the battery life of LTC batteries due to their flat discharge curve, the Battery Meter enables an accurate battery level to be determined for great features such as:
  • Accurate Low Battery Alerts - Alerts can be set at any level which provides enough time for new batteries to be fitted.
  • Battery Life Predictions - The Oyster2 can simply be deployed in the application with the desired settings for a short time (a week or so). The energy usage over this time can be determined, and from there battery life can predicted accurately - no more guesswork!


The Oyster2 uses bank-level AES-256 device authentication and data encryption to ensure that your data is kept private and secure.

LTC Batteries

The Oyster2 can be powered by Lithium Thionyl Chloride (LTC) batteries. These batteries help achieve the optimum performance due to the following reasons:
  • Higher quality out of the box, meaning less chance of early failures compared to other battery types
  • Extended temperature tolerance, operating temperatures of -40°C to +85°C are typical
  • High Capacity - meaning many years of operation
  • Extremely low self discharge - typically around 1%

3D Accelerometer

The Oyster2 is fitted with a 3-axis accelerometer which allows the device to ‘sleep’ in an ultra-low power state yet still wakeup when movement occurs. The GPS and accelerometer are used in tandem to intelligently determine when the device is moving, and increase the frequency of location updates. When movement ends, the update rate is scaled back to once per day. This ensures that up to date location information is always provided, without wasting any data or battery life.

The frequency of updates is easily configurable Over-the-Air, so that the desired update rate or battery life can be achieved.

  • Hardware Features

    Low-profile IP67 rugged housing

    The housing screws together for easy assembly, and has 2 convenient mounting tabs. It also has ‘strap slots’ allowing the Oyster2 to be cable tied or metal strapped to an asset. It is low-profile making it easier to mount in the corrugation on containers or concealed on the underside of a trailer, for example.

    AA size:
    The Oyster2 uses 3 x “AA” size batteries.

    Off-the-shelf Lithium:
    The device can be fitted with off-the-shelf 1.5V Lithium batteries. These are readily available from retail outlets, for example Energizer Ultimate Lithium.

    Lithium Thionyl Chloride (LTC) Batteries:
    For optimum performance the device can be fitted with LTC Batteries. This kind of battery offers extended temperature tolerance, high capacity and extremely low self-discharge rates.

    Battery Life with Adaptive-Tracking

    The Oyster2 can be set to use Adaptive-Tracking technology where the accelerometer and GPS data are used to intelligently work out if it is moving and to send frequent updates, and to scale the update rate down to once per day if the asset is stationary - to preserve battery life.

    Operating Temperature

    -20°C to +60°C

    For operation in extreme temperatures, the Oyster2 must be fitted with LTC batteries. Batteries are affected by temperature extremes and typical performance is dependent on temperature.

    The Oyster2 uses both the GPS and GLONASS positioning systems simultaneously. This allows the device to use twice the number of satellites to get a position fix – making it faster and more accurate.

    Low Noise GPS Amplifier (LNA)

    GPS signals are boosted by a special low-noise amplifier (LNA). This allows the Oyster2 to operate where normal units will fail to receive GPS signal – like in a container stack!

    The Oyster2 can be manufactured for specific markets around the world depending on their modem requirements. Available in 2G or 4G

    Internal Antenna

    Internal GPS and Cellular RF antennas tuned by the RF laboratories to ensure optimal performance.

    3 Axis Accelerometer

    The 3-axis accelerometer allows the Oyster2 to ‘sleep’ in an ultra-low power state yet still wakeup when movement occurs.

    The accelerometer also allows for High G-force event detection (like assets being dropped or involved in accidents)

    Flash Memory

    The Oyster2 has enough flash to store many weeks of data records, and will record information even when out of cellular coverage.

    The flash memory is also used to store firmware updates, GPS aiding data, parameters and other important information.

    Battery Meter

    A coulomb counter acts as a battery meter, tracking the energy consumption of the device. This enables an accurate battery percentage to be reported. The battery meter also allows accurate battery life predictions. Simply deploy the device in your application with the desired settings. The energy usage will be reported, enabling you to extrapolate to determine the battery life time.

  • Firmware Smarts

    OTA Configuration

    The Oyster2 can be remotely configured and updated OTA (over the air). Device management is performed from Digital Matter’s OEM Server device management platform.

    AES-256 Security

    The Oyster2 uses bank-level AES-256 device authentication and data encryption to ensure that your data is kept private and secure.

    Adaptive Tracking

    The Oyster2 can be set to use Adaptive-Tracking technology where the accelerometer and GPS data are used to intelligently work out of the device is moving and to send frequent updates, and to scale the update rate down to once per day if the asset is stationary - to preserve battery life.

    Recovery Mode

    The device can be remotely switched into Recovery Mode which switches the device to into "Live Tracking" mode – so that you can get your asset back!

    Text Message Setup

    The Oyster can also be sent text messages to setup the APN, server and other details.

    AssistNow Offline

    The Oyster2 will track successfully where other devices just give up.

    This fantastic technology allows the GPS to predict which satellites are in orbit above it and to dramatically reduce the time-to-first-fix of the GPS, and the overall performance of the GPS, especially in ‘urban canyon’ or forested environments

    G-Force Events

    The 3-axis accelerometer allows for high G-force events (like assets being dropped or involved in accidents) to be detected and reported to the server.

    After Hours

    The Oyster2 can be set to alert on after hours activity, and use different logging parameters after hours.


    The Oyster2 has the capacity to hold hundreds of geo-fences that can be downloaded to it from the server and updated over-the-air. This information can be used to implement geo-fence based alerting on the device, or to set alternate logging parameters when inside a geo-fence.

  • Device Management – OEM Server

    All Digital Matter devices are fully managed Over-The-Air (OTA) via our OEM Server web interface. The OEM Server seamlessly manages:

    • Device firmware – firmware updates can be done remotely
    • Network (administrator) parameters relating to critical communications
    • System parameters, including GPS parameters, IO configuration, logging options and general device behaviour settings
    • GPS AssistNow Offline aiding data files
    • Remote debugging of devices, including being able to trace data, view detailed debug message logs, and view a live trace of the server debug messages
    • Remote disconnect and reboot of devices
    • Driver list downloads to devices – this allows for the Driver Identification on the device to check if the RFID tag / username / PIN is valid, and for specific drivers to be allowed to drive / operate particular vehicles, for example based on licences or permits.
    • Geo-fence syncing with the devices – this allows the device to do advanced in-cab alerting and monitoring such as geo-fence arrival and departure, speed limit alerting, dangerous intersection warnings, turn on warning lights inside a geo-fence, and disable communications inside intrinsically safe zones such as gas plants.
    • Provides a command and message queueing platform to the devices and is incorporated into the remote management and debugging applications

    Data Connectors

    The OEM Server provides Data Connectors that forward data records on to the software platform of your choice, including Digital Matter’s own Telematics Guru platform.
