Nefab is a global provider of industrial packaging, logistics, and digital services dedicated to saving environmental and financial resources by optimizing supply chains. They collaborate closely with customers to create smarter packaging and logistics solutions, all while upholding high ethical standards.
Nefab offers digital services that improve supply chain visibility and accountability. Their tracking platforms work with any tracking device to simplify the management of returnable packaging and high value asset shipments. This enables clients to optimize pool size, reduce costs, and save time.
To provide a customer in the automotive industry with effective monitoring capabilities of goods during transit, Nefab had identified the Oyster Edge 4G as the best suited tracking device.
The Oyster Edge 4G devices were strategically placed on transport vehicles for the client. However, initial tests revealed that the standard G-force impact limitation of 8 Gs was frequently maxed out, indicating that the impacts experienced during transit were significantly higher. This situation highlighted the necessity for a tailored solution to effectively capture more comprehensive data on asset impacts.
The Digital Matter firmware team were engaged, working closely with Nefab to optimize these devices to suit client operating conditions. Through the custom firmware upgrades, the G-force detection range was significantly increased. This enhancement enabled the tracking system to provide improved asset condition monitoring and accurately reflect the impacts sustained during transit.
The upgraded devices now deliver increased figures that have been instrumental in providing meaningful insights into the conditions affecting the client’s assets, ultimately enabling Nefab’s digital solution to suggest relevant actions as preventative measures.
Sensor readings in Nefab’s track and trace platform for returnable packaging management
The implementation of the upgraded tracking capabilities yielded significant benefits for the client. The client now receives precise shock readings that closely correlate to the physical assets being monitored. This enhanced data allows for the proactive identification and addressing of issues related to asset integrity as well as the improvement of the overall logistics operations.
This collaboration with Nefab and Digital Matter has highlighted the value of understanding specific market needs and customizing solutions to meet those demands. By working together, Nefab were able to utilize the full potential of the Oyster Edge 4G devices, and thus provide more value to their client, fostering innovation and resilience in logistics operations.

Informal Recycling in South Africa Currently, more than 90,000 people in South Africa are making a living from collecting, sorting, and selling recyclable waste. According to the United Nation’s Industrial Development Organization, these ‘waste pickers’ collect between 80% and 90% of the country’s post-consumer plastic and paper packaging. The economic impacts of this are significant. In 2014, reclaimers saved municipalities R750 million in landfill space.
