Oyster2 at the Kariba Invitation Tiger Fish Tournament

Digital Matter

The Kariba Invitation Tiger Fish Tournament (KITFT) is one of the most popular fishing tournaments in Southern Africa and by far the largest in Zimbabwe. It is also the largest single-species four-man freshwater fishing tournament in the world.

The Tigerfish needs little introduction. Many young fishermen growing up in Zimbabwe regard the capture of a tigerfish as their ultimate angling goal. For the uninitiated, however, the tigerfish is probably Africa’s finest and most flamboyant game fish. For sheer aggression, pound for pound, it must rank as one of the world’s most powerful freshwater species.

Ezytrack, one of our channel operating out of Zimbabwe and a tournament sponsor, used the Oyster2 2G battery-powered tracking devices to track and monitor the boats of all participants this year.

Kariba Lake is the world’s largest man-made lake and reservoir by volume (280km / 170mi long)! In the event of an issue, the Oyster 2G shows emergency crews exactly where the boat is located so immediate action can be taken.

Geofences were also configured to ensure fishermen did not travel in out-of-bounds areas to protect both young Tanganyika sardines (kapenta juveniles) and species on spawning runs up the river.

Maximum Temperature recorded: 47 C / 116 F (phew!)
Total Mileage of the boat fleet: 27,426km / 17,041mi
Highest single day mileage for a boat: 242km / 150mi
Maximum speed recorded over the 3 days: 118 km/h / 73 mph
