Small IP67 Battery-Powered GPS Asset Tracker for use on LoRaWAN® networks

Download the brochureDOWNLOAD THE BROCHURE

The Yabby is a compact, rugged GPS tracking device that has been designed for tracking assets where a small device is required, such as on animals, livestock, packages, bags, bicycles and other assets.

The IP67 rated housing is rugged and UV stable, so the Yabby can be mounted on assets that are exposed to rain, dust and outdoor conditions.

The Yabby can operate in ultra-low power modes, and with a battery life of up to 3 years the Yabby can be attached to assets and tracked without needing to change batteries often.

The Yabby has a high-performance GNSS module (GPS, BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS, QZSS), a 3D accelerometer and internal antennas for GPS and LoRaWAN® communications.

The Yabby operates on both private and public LoRaWAN® networks around the world to give you coverage of your assets at a low data cost. The Yabby is available in 868MHz and 915MHz versions to cater for the various LoRaWAN® regions around the world.

  • Hardware Features

    Low-profile IP67 rugged housing

The housing screws together for easy assembly, and has 2 convenient mounting tabs. It is low-profile and light making it suitable for mounting on a collar, or placing in packages.

    Dimensions: 85 mm x 63 mm x 24 mm

    AAA size:
The Yabby uses 3 x “AAA” size 1.5V alkaline or lithium batteries

    Off-the-shelf 1.5V Lithium:
The Yabby should be fitted with off-the-shelf 1.5V Lithium batteries for operation in cold temperature conditions, or to offer the maximum battery life. These are readily available from retail outlets, for example Energizer Ultimate Lithium.

    Sleep Current:
    10uA (micro amps)

    Battery Life with Adaptive-Tracking

The Yabby can be set to use Adaptive-Tracking technology where the accelerometer and GPS data are used to intelligently work out if it is moving and to send frequent updates, and to scale the update rate down to once per day if the asset is stationary - to preserve battery life.

3 years @ one position per day (at 25°C).

    Operating Temperature

    -20°C to +60°C

For operation in extreme temperatures, the Yabby must be fitted with Lithium batteries. Batteries are affected by temperature extremes and typical performance is dependent on temperature.

    High sensitivity GPS

    • Supports concurrent GPS and GLONASS and other GNSS systems
    • 72 channel high sensitivity receiver
    • -167dBm industry leading tracking performance
    • Optimal hot-start performance.

The Yabby uses both the GPS and GLONASS positioning systems simultaneously. This allows the device to use twice the number of satellites to get a position fix – making it faster and more accurate.

    Low Noise GPS Amplifier (LNA)

GPS signals are boosted by a special low-noise amplifier (LNA). This allows the Yabby to operate where normal units will fail to receive GPS signal – like in a container stack!

    LoRaWAN Communications

The Yabby uses a high power radio transmitter / receiver that operates on LoRaWAN networks, and is available in for the various LoRaWAN frequencies around the world.

    Internal Antenna

Internal GPS and LoRaWAN RF antennas tuned by the RF laboratories to ensure optimal performance.

    3 Axis Accelerometer

The 3-axis accelerometer allows the Yabby to ‘sleep’ in an ultra-low power state yet still wakeup when movement occurs.

    Configuration Cable

The Yabby caters for a USB configuration adapter and cable, which is used to program firmware updates and configuration information on the device. The most common configuration parameters are also able to be updated OTA via LoRaWAN downlink messages.
  • The Yabby is a stand-alone tracking unit and therefore does not have peripherals available.

The Yabby requires a USB Configuration Cable in order to reprogram firmware or to configure the device. Configuration can also be done over-the-air using LoRaWAN downlink messages.
  • Firmware Smarts

    Adaptive Tracking

The Yabby can intelligently use the accelerometer to adapt the rate at which it gets a GPS fix and sends it on the network. For the longest battery life the Yabby can be set to do periodic updates, for example once per day.

    OTA Configuration

The Yabby can be remotely configured and some of the key operational parameters updated via the LoRaWAN downlink messages.

  • Software and Data Managment

Data from the Yabby device is sent to LoRaWAN™ gateways, which in turn will report the data via their LoRaWAN cloud infrastructure to the back-end server platform for processing and reporting. The LoRaWAN network server is not provided by Digital Matter.

There are several LoRaWAN network service providers for customers to choose from. Each of them have their own management interface and formats for providing data to a software platform.

Please contact Digital Matter if you require information on the integration of the Yabby data payloads.

    User Interface:

This can be Digital Matter’s Telematics.Guru platform which has built-in support for the Yabby device and protocols, or to your own server platform.

Please contact Digital Matter if you require information on the integration of the Yabby data formats.
